Humane Handling Services
During the last several years the USDA has implemented a number of FSIS Directives and Notices to strengthen its burgeoning humane handling enforcement.
In particular, FSIS Directive 6900.2, Rev.2 (August 2011) encourages the voluntary development of a “robust” systematic approach that gives your company regulatory discretion during the enforcement response to cited egregious events.
By employing new and creative humane handling methodologies to your already established program, the end result will help to preclude needless animal suffering, while enhancing the working conditions of your workers and improving the quality your meat products. All of these benefits ultimately results with significant decreases of financial losses to your company.
The current animal handling law that is enforced by the USDA is based on the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act (HMSA) of 1978. This act includes all food animals slaughtered at USDA plants such as cattle, calves, horses, mules, sheep, goats, swine, and other livestock. The regulations for humane slaughter are contained within Title 9 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 313 under the heading of Humane Slaughter of Livestock.
Chilton Consulting Group, Inc., can provide your company with experienced and expert advice for all of your humane handling needs. We offer customized humane handling programs, auditing, and competent consultation of cited non-compliances.
