BIENNIAL REGISTRATION BEGINS
The FDA has begun accepting biennial registration renewals for food facilities through its online system. All domestic and foreign facilities that manufacture, process, pack or hold food for human or animal consumption in the U.S. must renew their registration with the agency every two years. Facilities currently registered with the FDA must also provide up-to-date contact information and receive a new number. Facilities that do not go through the re-registration process will be cancelled and/or voided by the FDA as of January 1, 2013.
The FSMA law, signed by President Obama on January 4, 2011, ordered FDA to begin accepting re-registrations between October 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012. FDA did not begin registration renewal until October 22, 2012, missing the re-registration mandate.
